Cloud bills grow faster than the value they return unless cost control is part of delivery. A practical sequence for the first three months.
Why cost drifts
Lift-and-shift moves the cost, not the benefit. Idle resources, untagged accounts and over-provisioned instances quietly inflate the bill, and nobody owns the number.
Days 1 to 30: make spend visible
Enforce a tagging standard before the first workload lands, and give every team a showback report. Visibility changes behaviour faster than policy.
Days 31 to 60: right-size and commit
Use real utilisation data to right-size, then buy reserved or committed capacity for the stable baseline only. Leave burst workloads on demand.
Days 61 to 90: automate the guardrails
Budgets with alerts, scheduled shutdown of non-production environments and policy-as-code checks keep the gains. Review monthly, and tie savings back to the business case so the programme keeps its funding.
