Clinical AI That Clinicians Actually Use: Lessons From the Ward

By the VFACE team · 25 Sept 2026 · 5 min read

Hospital AI fails when it adds clicks. Four design rules that keep tools in daily use after the pilot ends.

Start with the clinician's minute

Time is the real constraint on a ward. A tool that saves ten minutes of documentation but adds three clicks to every task will be abandoned within a month. Shadow the workflow before choosing a use case.

Integrate where work already happens

Embed outputs in the EHR view clinicians already open, using HL7 FHIR APIs, instead of asking them to visit another screen. Single sign-on and context passing remove most friction.

Prove safety, then scale

Run a clinical safety case, test on subgroups, and pilot on a single unit with a named clinical lead. Publish the results internally, including failures, so trust grows from evidence.
